S’Cool Sounds brings music into the lives of children through in-person and remote learning opportunities.
Our free music lessons are written and produced by SCS Teaching Artists to enhance teaching and learning with music.
All units offer step-by-step lesson plans, videos, and supporting resources. Whether you are a music educator or enrich learning with music, children will learn songs and rhythms from around the world, recorder and ukulele playing, body percussion, and how to make percussion instruments with household items. While intended for grades K-8, the units can be enjoyed by children and families of all ages.
UNITS
Teaching Artist Evan Harris takes you on a historical, cultural, and musical trip through New York City. Students will grab their passports to visit The Lenape People of Manahatta, Chinatown, the Bronx, Jackson Heights, and Little Caribbean. They will learn music traditions and create rhythms along the way.
Teaching Artist Dave Adewumi explores historical facts and figures on this melodic journey in Black American music. Students will learn call and response, sing the blues, and use body percussion to engage rhythmically in this interactive music experience.
Teaching Artists Juan Manuel Trujillo and Hery Paz team up with puppets, Pepe and Tito, to introduce the musical influences of México, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, and Argentina. Students will hear stories, learn rhythmic patterns, and sing along.
Teaching Artist Dave Adewumi introduces the rich history of jazz and Black American music. Students will explore historical figures, perform rhythmic exercises, and sing along through the eras of jazz, swing, bebop, blues, and more.
Teaching Artist Juan Manuel Trujillo introduces students to the ukulele. Students will learn the basic principles of harmony and become acquainted with song forms. They’ll come together to form ensembles and play songs of the Americas.
Teaching Artist Ruaridh Pattison teaches the recorder while "traveling the world." Students will learn sound production, articulation, and fingerings. They’ll use body percussion, rhythm exercises, and other interactive musical activities to develop general music skills.
Teaching Artist Ronnie Malley takes you on a musical trip from the Middle East and North African regions. Students will play musical games, explore melodies, rhythms, popular children's songs, and discover celebrated Arabic singers and composers.
