Jazz and the World of Black American Music

Step-by-step lesson plans for grades 2-5

Teaching Artist Dave Adewumi introduces the rich history of jazz and Black American music.

Students will explore historical figures, perform rhythmic exercises, and sing along through the eras of jazz, swing, bebop, blues, and more.

LESSONS

This is the fifth lesson from the grades 2-5 Jazz and the World of Black American Music unit. Students will explore Black American music and its characteristics, including rhythmic frameworks. Then students will create a funk rhythm using their hands, body percussion, or adaptive instruments.

This is the second lesson from the grades 2-5 Jazz and the World of Black American Music unit. Students will be introduced to historical facts and figures in jazz music. They will learn the song “This Little Light of Mine” and sing it with their own musical styles. Then students will create a jazz band and perform for an audience.

This is the third lesson from the grades 2-5 Jazz and the World of Black American Music unit. Students will be introduced to historical facts and figures in the swing and bebop era. They will be able to play a swing beat and play along with a recording.

This is the fourth lesson from the grades 2-5 Jazz and the World of Black American Music unit. Students will be introduced to the historical facts and figures in cool jazz and hard bop. Then they will demonstrate a jazz style call and response.

This is the first lesson from the grades 2-5 Jazz and the World of Black American Music unit. Students will be introduced to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They will demonstrate knowledge of the blues and compose original blues lyrics.
